Imelday May

Saturday 20 June

About the artist

Once dubbed “the other queen of Ireland” by U2’s Bono, Imelda May has sure made an impact on her home country as a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, poet, actress and television presenter. She is one of the most celebrated female musicians there, famed for her rockabilly revival and sometimes compared to jazz singers such as Billie Holiday. After releasing her first album in 2003, she made her big breakthrough with her second, 2007’s Love Tattoo. It caught the attention of Jools Holland, who invited her to perform on his TV show and took her on tour. It wouldn’t be her last time working with other musicians; May’s collaborators vary from Jeff Beck and T Bone Burnett to Bono, Noel Gallagher and Ronnie Wood. Among many other things, she hosted her own music TV show, The Imelda May Show, showcasing new talent from Ireland and abroad. Her latest album 11 Past The Hour stems from 2021, as does A Lick And A Promise, a poetry collection. In Grolloo she’ll perform her Rock’n’Roll Show featuring (bandmate as well as ex-husband) Darrel Higham. In recent years, the duo have reunited for a series of special shows that revive the raw essence of classic rock & roll.
